Canadian National Railway Co. halted freight operations and embargoed traffic on its Toronto-to-Montreal mainline today after First Nations protesters blocked tracks near Marysville, Ontario.

In April, CN obtained an injunction barring illegal occupation of the rail corridor after native protesters blocked the line, but the Ontario Provincial Police declined to enforce the order. Now, First Nations protesters are again blocking the corridor and the police continue to refuse to intervene, CN said.

CN will halt operations and embargo traffic until the railroad receives assurances the police will remove protesters and guarantee safety, the Class I said.

The corridor is CN’s busiest, averaging 25 freight trains and 22 VIA Rail Canada Inc. trains daily. Yesterday, VIA Rail cancelled passenger-rail service on the corridor.
