CN offers instant carload rates on the Internet

Canadian National Railway Co. has rounded another turn on the e-business curve. Today, the Class I announced it’s offering shippers instantaneous carload rates 24/7 on its Web site, www.cn.ca.

The site provides prices on all carload traffic moving within CN’s North American network, all CSX Transportation destinations, and selected destinations served by BNSF Railway Co., Union Pacific Railroad and Norfolk Southern Railway. CN plans to offer rates for Canadian Pacific Railway destinations by mid-August.

“This new pricing tool significantly increases the speed at which we can quote rates for our customers and makes it much easier for shippers to do business with us,” said James Foote, CN executive vice president of sales and marketing, in a prepared statement. “In years past, the manual, time-intensive methods of quoting single-line and interline prices could take days or even weeks.”

The Class Is are working jointly to provide universal coverage for the carload pricing tool. Currently, CN, BNSF and CSXT are providing instantaneous interline rates on their Web sites as part of the Class Is’ "A+B Pricing" initiative.
