CN’s mitigation-pact scorecard now has reached 14. Yesterday, the Class I announced it reached Elgin, Joliet & Eastern Railway Co.-related mitigation agreements with the villages of Matteson and Vernon Hills, Ill., that address the municipalities' traffic and noise concerns.
CN agreed to fund quiet zones and noise mitigation measures, and provide emergency response personnel training. In north suburban Vernon Hills, the railroad will help create and maintain quiet zones, install safety fencing and improve emergency communications.
“CN has started re-routing some trains over the EJ&E and expects full integration of the CN and EJ&E networks within three years,” said Gordon Trafton, CN senior vice president-Southern Region, in a prepared statement. “As we move forward with the integration and infrastructure improvements, CN is committed to communicating changes in a timely manner to all 33 communities affected by the acquisition."
CN previously reached mitigation agreements with Chicago Heights, Crest Hill, Frankfort, Hoffman Estates, Joliet, Mokena, Mundelein, Richton Park and West Chicago, Ill.; and Dyer, Griffith and Schererville, Ind.
