CN seals EMD locomotive-engine remanufacturing deal

Canadian National Railway Co. April 16 announced it recently awarded General Motors Corp.’s Electro-Motive Division (EMD) a six-year contract to remanufacture diesel engines of 300 high-horsepower mainline locomotives built between 1989 and 1999.
EMD will provide CN all materials, technical oversight, specifications, certifications and full warranties for the remanufacture of EMD 710 diesel engines in the railroad’s EMD-built fleet of SD60, SD70 and SD75 locomotives, which produce 3,800 to 4,300 horsepower. The contract covers about 30 percent of CN’s 1,100-unit fleet.
"This project will increase locomotive efficiency and reliability, … [and] ensure these locomotives meet new environmental regulations requiring reduced diesel-engine air emissions," said Jack McBain, CN senior vice president of operations, in a prepared statement.
The contract follows CN’s March order for 60 DASH 9-44CW locomotives from General Electric Transportation Systems; the railroad expects to take delivery of the units by the end of 2004.
CN since 1995 has acquired 384 new locomotives, lowering the average age of its mainline fleet to about 13 years compared with nearly 18 years in early 1995.
