Yesterday, Canadian National Railway Co. filed an injunction in a Manitoba court seeking to prevent Manitoba First Nations from blocking rail lines to protest the Canadian government’s handling of native land claim negotiations.

First Nations officials publicly stated the tribe will conduct 24-hour rail blockades in southern Manitoba on June 29 as part of their protest, CN said.

The rail blockades “would be unsafe and unfairly harm CN, its customers and their employees,” CN officials said in a prepared statement, adding that the railroad would try to maintain normal transportation services during a blockade.

CN officials shared their concerns with Manitoba First Nations leaders and asked the tribe to reconsider the blockade plan.
