Canadian National Railway Co. and Algoma Steel Inc. May 2 announced a land-use agreement that will enable CN to stop passing 11 highway-rail crossings in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.
Under the pact, Algoma Steel will grant CN a property easement, which will enable the Class I to construct a direct rail connection from the Power Canal Bridge to its Sault Ste. Marie yard, and end its current practice of backing trains over 11 crossings through the inner city.
"[The agreement] will significantly improve road safety and vehicular-traffic flows in Sault Ste. Marie, while improving the efficiency of our rail operations," said Keith Heller, CN senior vice president, eastern Canada division, in a prepared statement.
