Early next year, Canadian National Railway Co. plans to acquire 350 new box cars and 200 centerbeam flat cars to better serve its service-sensitive forest-products shippers.

The high-cube, 50-foot box cars will carry newsprint and fine papers; the 73-foot centerbeam cars, lumber. All cars will have a 286,000-pound gross rail-load capacity, according to a prepared statement.

CN plans to build 100 of the box cars at its Transcona Shops in Winnipeg, Manitoba — the Class I's first new-car builds in decades. The other box cars will be built by Trinity Industries Inc.; the centerbeam cars by The Greenbrier Cos.' TrentonWorks Ltd.

"CN is the largest carrier of forest-product commodities in North America and has grown its forest-products marketshare on the strength of its highly successful scheduled railroad services," said Stan Jablonski, CN vice president, forest products. "The new rolling stock will enhance our forest products fleet, making CN's customers more competitive in their end markets."
