The Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS®) recently announced six finalists — including Canadian Pacific Railway — for its 2003 Franz Edelman Award for Achievement in Operations Research and the Management Sciences.
The award recognizes best-practice projects that "change people's lives," according to a prepared statement. For example, Continental Airlines and CALEB Technology were honored last year for developing a disaster recovery system that proved useful on Sept. 11, 2001.
The finalists are:
• CPR with MultiModal Applied Systems Inc. for "Perfecting the Scheduled Railroad: Model-Driven Operating Plan Development";
• Bank Hapoalim for "Opti-Money at Bank Hapoalim: A Model-Based Investment Decision Support System for Individual Customers";
• Emery Forwarding for "Network Routing Optimization Models For Emery Forwarding";
• Hewlett-Packard for "Designing the Supply Chain to Optimize the Profitability of Hewlett-Packard's Supply Chains";
• Texas Children's Hospital with PROS Revenue Management for "Contract Optimization at Texas Children's Hospital"; and
• United Parcel Service for "Planning the United Parcel Service Air Network."
On May 6, INFORMS plans to announce the winner at its conference to be held at the Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Resort and Spa in Phoenix.
