CSX has donated $50,000 to the American Red Cross to help support disaster-relief efforts in areas impacted by Hurricane Idalia.

In late August, the strong storm caused severe flooding and wind damage in parts of Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas. The Red Cross is providing safe shelter, food and health services in the region, as well as supporting emergency response agencies and assisting with damage assessment.

CSX also will match employees’ contributions to the Red Cross and the CSX Employee Disaster Relief Fund. In addition, the Class I is donating 21 pallets of water for residents in the Tallahassee, Florida, area, and a freight trailer of ice to a United Way distribution point operated by the Army National Guard in Mayo, Florida.

“CSX is deeply connected to communities in the areas that took a hit from Hurricane Idalia, and we are grateful to the American Red Cross and all agencies that are responding with assistance for impacted families,” said CSX President and CEO Joe Hinrichs in a press release. “Many CSX employees live in the impacted region, and we know the resilience of the communities currently working to assess damage, clean up and rebuild.”

The Class I temporarily suspended some operations during the storm. In Waycross, Florida, production was halted for a period of time at one of five humps until the eye of the storm passed over the hump yard.

Meanwhile, Norfolk Southern Railway also has committed $50,000 to the Red Cross for disaster relief efforts in areas impacted by the hurricane. Any additional contributions made by employees to the Red Cross will be matched by the Norfolk Southern Foundation.

"Norfolk Southern is committed to the safety and well-being of the communities we serve across our 22-state network. Through this donation and partnership with the American Red Cross, we can provide critical support and aid to those in need, helping to rebuild and restore communities impacted by Hurricane Idalia,” said NS Director of Corporate Giving Kristin Wong in an email.

The storm impacted the railroad's southeast region in the corridor between Atlanta and Jacksonville, as well as along routes to and from some southeast ports.
