Next month, CSX Intermodal and Union Pacific Railroad plan to launch UMAX, a domestic interline container program designed to provide shippers access to more than 20,000 containers and an expanded market reach across North America.
To be available beginning March 29, UMAX will feature more than 600 service lanes supported by “faster and more frequent train schedules,” CSXI and UP officials said in a prepared statement. The program will offer rail-provided 53-foot containers to intermodal marketing companies, motor carriers, freight brokers, and parcel, truckload and less-than-truckload customers. UMAX will replace separate interline programs currently offered by CSXI and UP.
“In a word, UMAX offers customers more,” said CSXI President James Hertwig. “We will jointly offer more containers and more lanes to more customers with more competitive schedules than ever.”
UMAX also will provide ramp-to-ramp and door-to-door service, Web-based container reservations and billing, and a single freight bill.
“[We’re] committed to … providing truck-competitive schedules that maximize the benefits and efficiencies of rail intermodal,” said UP Vice President and General Manager-Intermodal John Kaiser.
