Yesterday, Volkswagen Group of America held a ceremony to commemorate the completion of a rail system at its Chattanooga, Tenn., plant that will be used to move about 85 percent of the vehicles built at the factory to dealers across North America.

The rail yard will be served by CSX Transportation (for moves along the East Coast) and Norfolk Southern Railway (for deliveries in other territories). Trains will transport Passats to 16 U.S., three Canadian and one Mexican destination.

The Tennessee Valley Railroad Authority will serve as the switching agent to help move vehicles from the rail yard to a switch yard, where CSXT and NS will access the cars.

“This is another important milestone in Volkswagen’s return to production in North America,” said Frank Fischer, chief executive officer and chairman of Volkswagen Chattanooga, in a prepared statement. “The rail yard is a vital connection for Volkswagen Chattanooga, as the vast majority of our cars will ship by train.”
