Add CSX Transportation to the growing list of Class Is that had a banner industrial development year in 2006. The railroad recently announced it landed more than 140 industrial development projects — including 88 new facilities and 50 plant expansions — worth more than $2.7 billion.

The projects include a new automobile assembly plant in West Point, Ga.; a dedicated intermodal terminal in Mario, Ohio; a new unit train terminal for perishable goods in Rotterdam, N.Y.; a solid waste landfill in Coalton, Ky.; and several coal staging facilities. Once all the projects are complete, they will general more than 150,000 additional carloads for CSXT annually, the Class I estimates.

CSXT partners with state, local and economic development officials to help companies identify sites for new facilities or ways to expand existing facilities. The railroad provides plant location services, including site layout, engineering and logistics assistance.

BNSF Railway Co., Norfolk Southern Railway and Union Pacific Railroad previously announced successful 2006 industrial development campaigns.
