CSXT enhances emergency responders worst-case scenario readiness

CSX Transportation recently provided more than 2,500 state and local emergency response and planning agencies across the eastern United States a more comprehensive emergency planning guide, which offers detailed information on a wide range of possible railroad occurrences, including terrorism and hazardous-materials incidents.
"Our company's goal is zero accidents and we work very hard at prevention," said Skip Elliott, CSXT assistant general manager-hazardous material systems, in a statement prepared June 14. "But accidental spills, derailments, highway-rail crossing incidents and other emergencies can occur along our network, so we feel duty-bound to ensure readiness among our emergency-response partners."
In addition to providing the guide, CSXT conducts various training programs, such as proper handling of chemicals, gases and other hazardous materials, and provides haz-mat instruction at Association of American Railroad's Emergency Response Training Center in Pueblo, Colo. More than 5,000 emergency personnel last year attended CSXT's training programs.
