Last week, CSX Transportation named 59 chemical shippers as winners of its annual Chemical Safety Excellence Award (CSEA), which recognizes customers' efforts to improve hazardous materials transportation via safe loading procedures and rail-car maintenance.

To qualify for the award, a company must ship 600 or more cars on CSXT in a given year with no accidental haz-mat releases attributed to loading or unloading processes. Eligible shippers include companies from the chemicals, fertilizer, agriculture and metals merchandise commodity sectors, as well as from emerging markets.

Meanwhile, Union Pacific Railroad plans to spend about $17 million to upgrade a 26-mile line between Dupo and Valmeyer, Ill. The project calls for removing and installing new rail, renewing surfaces at 38 grade crossings and replacing five switches. In addition, crews will remove and install more than 11,000 ties, replace seven switches and spread more than 4,000 tons of ballast at a yard in Dupo.
