Last week, the Chicago SouthShore & South Bend Railroad received CSX Transportation's second annual short line and regional railroad marketing award for registering the highest year-over-year carload increase among the Class I's interline partners.

The 129-mile short line's 2004 traffic with CSXT increased about 60 percent to nearly 11,000 carloads compared with 2003. Chicago SouthShore and CSXT have a contract with Northern Indiana Public Service Co. to move coal unit trains to a generating station near Burns Harbor, Ind. The railroad also move steel slabs from several International Steel Group plants to a Burns Harbor steel mill.

CSXT officials presented Chicago SouthShore Director of Marketing and Customer Service Chuck Compton a $5,000 check, which the short line plans to use to help fund two Michigan City, Ind., charities and pay for a company-wide luncheon celebration.

An Anacostia & Pacific Co. subsidiary, Chicago SouthShore provides service between Chicago and South Bend, Ind. CSXT is the short line's largest interchange partner, moving about half the small road's 60,000 annual carloads.
