Last year, CSX Transportation attracted 145 industrial development projects along its lines, a 20 percent increase compared with 2003. The projects will generate an additional 95,000 carloads annually.

Plastics producers and receivers, scrap metal and steel processors, wood chip companies, municipal solid waste handlers, and construction and demolition debris firms proposed the majority of the new plants or facility expansions.

“The high number of industrial development projects demonstrates growing demand in the rail system," said Derrick Smith, CSXT vice president of emerging markets, in a prepared statement.

Short lines helped attract some of the projects. Fifteen industries proposing to add more than 9,000 carloads to CSXT’s business will be located on 11 connecting short lines because of small-road partners efforts last year, Smith said.
