CSXT plays role in transporting bulky transformer
advertisement
CSX Transportation recently helped Barnhart Crane and Rigging Co. move a 292,000-pound transformer 400 miles in six days from a power plant in Brownsville, Tenn., to an electrical generating station under construction in Billingsley, Ala. — a shipment that typically would take three weeks.
After heavy-rigging supplier and transportation provider Barnhart loaded the transformer onto a TTX Co. eight-axle, heavy-duty, depressed-center rail car, CSXT quickened clearances and operated a dedicated train from Brownsville to Pletcher, Ala. There, Barnhart loaded the transformer onto a hydraulic platform trailer — designed to lower large equipment's height — for a 13-mile trip to the construction site.
Barnhart expedited delivery to enable power-plant developer Tenaska Inc. to replace a damaged transformer and maintain its Billingsley construction schedule, according to a prepared statement. Tenaska expects to open a natural-gas generating station in early summer.
