On Monday, CSX Transportation announced it awarded a $60 million contract to Scott Bridge Co. to complete alterations to the 14-Mile Bridge over the Mobile River in Mobile, Ala.

The project is estimated to cost $72 million, including the construction contract. About 94 percent of project costs will be covered by the federal government under the Truman-Hobbs Act, which is administered by the U.S. Coast Guard; CSXT will pay the remainder, including the cost of design improvements, and communications and signals work.

The existing swing-span bridge was built in 1925. Designed to more than double the structure’s capacity for accommodating vessels using the waterway, the project calls for replacing the existing swing span with a vertical lift span to increase horizontal clearance from 146 feet to 300 feet. The lift span will rise 60 feet.

Site work is under way, and construction is expected to start within two months and be completed in two years. The bridge is named for its location, which is situated about 14 miles north of Mobile.
