The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently presented CSX Transportation a SmartWay Excellence Award, which recognizes freight carriers that make significant environmental protection contributions.

The only railroad among the SmartWay Transport Partnership's 600-plus members to receive the honor, CSXT during the past few years has conserved 30 million gallons of diesel, improved fuel efficiency, invested more than $1 billion to acquire locomotives that cut fuel consumption and reduce air emissions, and pursued a voluntary policy to reduce locomotive idling, the EPA said in a prepared statement.

The EPA introduced the SmartWay program in 2004. Freight transportation participants aim to cut fuel usage and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Based on three-year commitments to the program, participating companies have conserved more than 600 million gallons of diesel annually and eliminated about 7 million metric tons of carbon dioxide from being emitted into the air.
