CSXT taps former exec to reload e-biz strategy

CSX Transportation June 14 named Alan Blumenfeld senior vice president e-business — marking Blumenfeld’s return to CSX Corp. after a three-year stint at Minneapolis-based Ecolab Inc.
Blumenfeld, who’ll report to CSXT President Michael Ward, will be responsible for developing and implementing the railroad’s e-business strategy.
"Alan brings a great combination of rail industry knowledge and extensive experience with the linkage between technology and e-business," said Ward in a prepared statement.
Prior to 1998, Blumenfeld served as CSX Technology vice president-application services, heading a group responsible for maintaining and developing application software to support CSX’s rail and intermodal businesses.
He joined Ecolab in 1998 as vice president and chief information officer, helping to develop the company’s e-business strategy.
Blumenfeld succeeds former CSXT Senior Vice President E-Business Ken Johnson, who resigned from the railroad in late April — after serving six months — to pursue an opportunity with another company.
Under Johnson’s leadership, CSXT had planned to develop a new Web site, complete a demo site by July and launch the exchange by year-end.
The revamped site would be designed to ask users simpler questions to improve ease-of-doing-business functionality, give customers access to valid pricing features and enable users to access demand-forecasting tools.
In a May interview, CSXT Assistant Vice President of Corporate Communications and Public Affairs Kathy Burns said the railroad would continue to develop a standard process and platform for launching e-business initiatives, and create ways to make CSXT’s site easier to use.
