And the railroad industry’s top environmental award goes to … CSX Transportation Director of Locomotive Engineering Donald Robey.

Yesterday, the Association of American Railroads (AAR) named Robey winner of the John H. Chafee Environmental Excellence Award for developing and implementing a locomotive fleet horsepower reduction program designed to cut greenhouse gases by about 100,000 tons and reduce fuel consumption by 12.5 million gallons the next five years.

Robey has received two Awards of Excellence and five Cut-Through-The-Knot Awards from CSXT for his technological and cost-saving programs, many of which remain in place today, CSXT officials said in a prepared statement.

“Don Robey developed a very innovative concept to not only to reduce emissions, but also to reduce fuel consumption,” said AAR President and Chief Executive Officer Edward Hamberger in a prepared statement.

The Chafee Award is named after U.S. Sen. Lincoln Chafee’s (R-RI) late father, who promoted the environmental advantages of rail transportation. The award recognizes an individual railroad employee who has demonstrated outstanding environmental awareness and responsibility.

Also nominated for the award: Amtrak’s Gary Stafford, BNSF Railway Co.’s Terrance Gay, Canadian Pacific Railway’s Ken Perry, Norfolk Southern Corp.’s Wendell McCoy and Union Pacific Railroad’s Dennis Sullivan.
