On Dec. 15, Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) dedicated a renovated station and rail yard terminal that are part of the authority’s largest-ever capital improvement project — the $482.6 million renovation of the Cermak (Douglas) branch of the Blue Line.

The 54th/Cermak station now features three entrances; a platform with benches, overhead heaters and enhanced lighting; a ramp, wheelchair turnstile, Braille signs and teletypewriter telephones; and a public-address system and audio/visual station signs.

Designed to hold 100 rail cars, the expanded rail yard includes a new transportation office building, rail-car washer, track and signal maintenance building, and yard office building.

The Cermak (Douglas) line renovation is scheduled for completion in January 2005. The project includes reconstructing eight stations, and replacing track and support structures.
