Rail News: Rail Industry Trends
Chicago Transit Authority recently opened its renovated 54th/Cermak Station. Part of the authority’s $482.6 million Cermak (Douglas) Blue Line rehabilitation, the station is the second of eight facilities to undergo reconstruction.
The renovated station includes three entrances; a platform with benches, overhead heaters, lighting and canopies; a ramp, wheelchair turnstyle, TTY telephones and Braille signs for passengers with disabilities; and audio/visual signs and public-address system.
CTA plans to expand a rail yard at the station, which is located at the end of the line. The new yard will be designed to handle 100 rail cars — 12 more than the yard currently holds. Scheduled to be complete in October, the yard also will include a new transportation center, rail-car washer and switchman’s buildings.
Scheduled for completion in 2005, the Cermak (Douglas) rehabilitation project includes track replacement, column adjustment, painting, signal/communications work and substation construction.
