Rail News: Rail Industry Trends
On Jan. 19, Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) plans to unveil the Chicago Card Plus™ — an electronic farecard that passengers can manage via an online account.
The card is designed to automatically charge a customer’s credit card for a predetermined amount each time an account reaches $10, providing passengers enough value on their card during 24-hour data processing. Customers also can check card balances and change preferences online.
Chicago Card Plus can be used as a 30-day pass or a pay-per-use card.
In April, the card will be available as part of the authority’s Transit Benefit program, which deducts fares from an employee’s pre-tax payroll if they work for a participating employer.
CTA is the country’s first transit agency to offer an account-based system, according to a prepared statement.
