California business group lauds Caltrain for 'reinvention' effort

The San Mateo County Economic Development Association (SAMCEDA) recently presented Caltrain a “SAMCEDA Business Award of Excellence” for the transit agency’s outstanding contributions to the San Mateo Peninsula.

In particular, SAMCEDA recognized Caltrain for its “reinvention,” which began in 2005 as an approach to resolving a projected $13.5 million deficit. Instead of cutting service, Caltrain elected to increase its daily number of trains and change “stop” patterns to reduce travel times. The result? At 35,000, Caltrain’s average weekday ridership represents about a 40 percent increase since 2004.

In March, Caltrain received a “Success in Enhancing Ridership Award” from the Federal Transit Administration.
