California short line seeks STB approval to lease port-owned track

Yolo Shortline Railroad Co. recently filed a petition with Surface Transportation Board seeking approval to lease and operate 3.1 track miles in West Sacramento, Calif., now owned and maintained by Port of Sacramento.
The port currently owns and maintains eight track miles on the Sacramento-Yolo Port Belt Railroad line.
The port's track comprises spurs and sidings within its fenced-in industrial area; the port would retain control and maintain track within the fenced-in area while the 26-mile short line would be the sole carrier providing direct rail service to the port.
Pending STB approval, Port and Yolo officials expect to finalize the transaction soon.
