The California Transportation Commission recently allocated nearly $140 million to the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) to help fund several transportation projects. The funds are part of the State Transportation Improvement Program and voter-approved Proposition 1B, a $20 billion bond program that targets dollars at transportation projects statewide.

The commission allocated:
• $69 million for a new lane on the Riverside Freeway;
• $29.2 million for construction of the Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center;
• $22.6 million for the Kraemer Boulevard grade separation project;
• $15 million for the Placentia Avenue grade separation project;
• $2 million for grade crossing improvements in San Clemente and Dana Point; and
• $1 million for signal synchronization work.

Meanwhile, OCTA announced that work is under way to improve safety at five crossings in San Juan Capistrano, Calif., for motorists and pedestrians, including necessary upgrades for a quiet zone.

To be completed by fall, the work calls for upgrading and updating warning devices, installing additional gate arms, extending and raising medians, improving signage and coordinating traffic signals. After the improvements are completed, the city plans to apply for quiet zone status.

OCTA is partnering with eight cities to implement an $85 million program that calls for safety enhancements at 50 Orange County crossings. Construction is scheduled for completion by year’s end.
