Caltrain continues work on new maintenance, operations facility

Caltrain recently awarded an $11.6 million contract to Shimmick Construction to complete the next phase of the Caltrain Equipment Maintenance and Operations Facility.

To be located in San Jose, Calif., north of the agency’s Diridon station, the $76 million facility will include a repair shop to enable Caltrain workers to perform work that’s currently outsourced. The building also will include an indoor train washer to replace a portable machine. A three-story operations building will be constructed next to the maintenance facility for dispatchers and other staff.

Later this year, Shimmick will begin relocating mainline tracks to make room for the facility, and dig a pedestrian tunnel so workers can move between the shop and new operations building.

The final phase of the project includes constructing the central control facility and operations buildings. Caltrain expects to begin accepting bids next March and start construction in August 2005. The facility is scheduled to be complete by the end of 2006.
