On Saturday, Caltrain officially will open its $140 million equipment maintenance and operations facility.

The Centralized Equipment Maintenance & Operations Facility — Caltrain’s first-ever “home” for maintenance and operations — will accommodate inspections, maintenance, repairs, train washing and storage, enabling the agency to complete some work that historically has been contracted out.

The opening is "particularly welcome" for Caltrain maintenance employees, who for the past three years have had to work outside in "all kinds of weather with few amenities, often crawling on the ground to do repairs" during construction, the agency says.
