Rail News: Rail Industry Trends
Earlier this week, the Canadian government agreed to contribute about $520 million toward the Asia-Pacific Gateway and Corridor Initiative, which is designed to increase Canada’s share of West Coast container traffic from 9 percent to 14 percent by 2020.
About $283 million will be granted for various transportation, infrastructure and border security projects to be completed in western Canada within four years. Private firms have committed more than $3 billion to help fund corridor-related projects between 2004 and 2010.
Rail-related projects that will receive federal funds include the replacement of two swing bridges, construction of several grade separations, creation of the South Fraser Perimeter Road Deltaport Connnector and implementation of the Customs Marine Container Program for the Prince Rupert Port Authority, according to the Railway Association of Canada.
