Consolidated Thompson Iron Mines Ltd. (CLM) recently completed an environmental assessment of its proposed 19-mile rail line in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.

The mining company plans to build the line from Bloom Lake iron ore loading facilities to an existing rail line between the Wabush Mines installations and Quebec North Shore & Labrador Railway. The environmental assessment, which identifies direct and indirect impacts resulting from construction, was completed in time to enable CLM to complete the line and begin shipping iron ore concentrate from Bloom Lake by September 2009, the mining firm said.

Preliminary sitework on the line is under way. CLM plans to begin building the rail bed and installing rail in early 2009.

The line will be owned and operated by the Bloom Lake Railway, which will be incorporated in Newfoundland and Labrador, and be based in Wabush.
