Canadian port lands federal funds for metal fabrication facility

On Wednesday, the Canadian government announced it will provide $1.5 million to the Port of Belledune in New Brunswick to help fund the construction of new transportation infrastructure.
The port, which is served by CN, plans to build a new facility for producing and storing pre-assembled steel units. The building will feature 20-ton overhead cranes, welding stations and other equipment.
New multi-modal transhipment capacity will enable the port to take advantage of shortsea shipping opportunities along the eastern seaboard, port officials said in a prepared statement.
“The worldwide demand for low-cost modular fabrication locations adjacent to ice-free, deep-water ports with heavy-lift capacity is increasing,” said Harry Williamson, chairman of the Belledune Port Authority.
