VIA Rail Canada Inc. recently received the Railway Association of Canada's (RAC) 2008 Safety Award for installing defibrillators on all trains, and at select passenger stations and workplaces.
The railroad has trained 625 workers to operate the devices, which are designed to restart a person's heart. Since the initiative began last December, VIA Rail has installed 185 defibrillators.
RAC created the annual safety awards program in 2005 to encourage passenger and freight railroads to adopt safer operating practices.
