Canadian railroads, environmentalists team up to bolster fuel storage tank safety/security
advertisement
Canadian freight and passenger railroads and environmental specialists recently agreed on an initiative aimed at beefing up fuel storage tank safety and security.
The parties will develop a training manual and other materials for field staff on constructing new tanks and managing existing ones.
The Railway Association of Canada (RAC) — which represents the interests of 55 freight and passenger railroads — and environmental consulting firm Stragis will develop an industry-wide plan. Stragis provides various petroleum storage tank system management and fuel-handling services, including compliance inspections and monitoring, and environmental emergency plan development.
The initiative will be implemented through the rail industry’s Environment Committee. Environment Canada will help the industry interpret federal regulations associated with fuel storage tanks.
