Canadian railway association boots up greenhouse gas emission calculator

The Railway Association of Canada (RAC) recently launched an online "Rail Freight Greenhouse Gas Calculator," which is designed to calculate air emissions generated by a specific rail shipment.
Shippers can access the calculator on RAC's Web site at www.railcan.ca to enter a shipment's weight and total kilometers. The tool then calculates total greenhouse gas emissions.
Each year, Canadian railroads move two-thirds of the nation's surface freight by volume, yet only generate 3 percent of greenhouse gas emissions, RAC said.
"This tool helps our customers and others better understand the difference they can make by choosing rail, on a shipment-by-shipment basis, and by making better environmental choices overall," said RAC Vice President of Corporate and Public Affairs Bruce Burrows in a prepared statement.
