Canadian short line earns economic development honor
advertisement
Last month, the province of Manitoba presented an Economic Development Innovation award for community involvement to the Boundary Trail Railway Co. (BTRC). The award recognizes the railroad’s effort to acquire abandoned rail from Canadian Pacific and establish the first grain producer-owned short line in the province.
Last year, BTRC acquired a 23-mile line from CP between Morden and Manitou, as well as 55 miles of abandoned right of way from Binney to Holmfield. The short line launched operations in June 2009.
Each year, the province presents Capturing Opportunity Awards in four categories to individuals, organizations and businesses to recognize their dedication and leadership in local communities. Winners receive a commemorative glass award and $1,000 to contribute to the community organization of their choice.
