On Saturday, Mackenzie Northern Railway (MKNR) plans to host
a hazardous materials safety awareness seminar for northern Alberta first responders and community representatives in Peace River, Alberta.

The Canadian Chemical Producers Association (CCPA) is sponsoring the event, which will include a TransCAER haz-mat response presentation and exercise using a specially designed tank car. Representatives from MKNR, Canadian National Railway Co., the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and Operation Lifesaver also will conduct safety presentations.

"Events such as this provide an opportunity for first responders and the
public to improve their understanding of the railway's role in safely handling dangerous goods through communities, and to be further prepared in the event of an incident involving train operations," said MKNR General Manager Tim Husel in a prepared statement.

MKNR operates 602 track miles in northwestern Alberta and the Northwest Territories.
