Car orders, deliveries and backlog post first-quarter gains, ARCI says

During the first quarter, rail-car deliveries totaling 18,542 units increased 3.3 percent compared with fourth-quarter 2005 and 17.3 percent compared with first-quarter 2005, according to data released by the American Railway Car Institute Committee (ARCI) of the Railway Supply Institute.

First-quarter car orders totaled 35,991 units, a 36 percent increase compared with the fourth quarter and 104 percent increase compared with first-quarter 2005.

Meanwhile, the car backlog as of April 1 totaled 86,857 units compared with the 69,408-unit backlog on Dec. 31, 2005, and 60,986-unit backlog on Oct. 1.
