Carriers' committee, UTU reach tentative contract

National Carriers’ Conference Committee (NCCC) and United Transportation Union May 4 announced a tentative contract agreement covering wages, work rules and health-care coverage.
The agreement — which would apply to train and engine-service workers, and yardmasters — is subject to ratification by union members.
Officials of UTU and NCCC — which acts as the bargaining representative for more than 30 U.S. freight roads, including five Class Is — plan to release contract details following a May 23 meeting of affected UTU rail general chairpersons.
The agreement, which builds on a September 2000 tentative pact, also addresses entry pay and remote-control technology issues, said UTU International President Byron Boyd Jr. in a prepared statement.
