Rail News: Rail Industry Trends
Federal Transit Administration recently approved a $246 million Full Funding Grant Agreement for Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) to increase capacity on the 19-station Brown Line.
Since 1998, ridership on the line has increased 21 percent — the system’s highest growth rate, according to CTA. Most stations on the line currently are designed to accommodate six-car trains. The project would enable stations to accommodate eight-car trains.
The $529.9 million project also would rehabilitate rail infrastructure and stations, upgrade stations to meet ADA-accessibility requirements, upgrade and replace traction power, signal and communication equipment, and reduce or eliminate slow zones.
Built more than 100 years ago, the Brown Line travels between downtown Chicago and the city’s northwest side. The line is one of CTA’s busiest, carrying 66,000 passengers daily.
