The Belt Railway Co. of Chicago (BRC) recently named Patrick O'Brien president. Previously vice president, controller and treasurer, O'Brien began serving in his new role in late January.

In 1986, he joined the short line, which is owned by Burlington Northern Santa Fe, Canadian National Railway Co., Canadian Pacific Railway, CSX Transportation, Norfolk Southern Railway and Union Pacific Railroad.

O'Brien succeeds Tom Shurstad, who was named Pacer Stacktrain president and chief executive officer in January 2002 after serving as BRC president since 1998.

BRC owns and operates 28 miles of mainline and more than 300 miles of switching tracks. The short line connects with all railroads serving Chicago and handles more than 2 million rail cars annually.
