China obtains computerized operating system to improve package delivery by rail

China's Ministry of Railways recently purchased Turbolinux Inc.'s operating systems and software applications to centralize and streamline the country's package delivery operations.

China's package delivery system relies on a national postal service and rail transportation. Turbolinux's Linux-based system will link package delivery facilities and the Ministry of Railway's computer network, helping process 95 percent of total freight volume or about 200 million parcels annually.

The system is designed to track and manage packages, expedite internal communication, increase security by requiring password-based authentication and provide real-time data to the public.

The Ministry of Railways plans to install the system at 14 railway bureaus, 230 stations and more then 440 package delivery service facilities.
