A conference that aims to address the critical issues facing China’s urban and intercity rail markets is set for late summer in Shanghai.

Designed by the Shanghai Railway Society and jointly hosted by the Shanghai Traffic Transportation Trade Association and Global Leaders Institute, City-Rail 2007 will be held Sept. 11-12 at the JW Marriott Shanghai.

The event will include case study presentations, panel discussions, workshops and keynote addresses. Speakers are scheduled to participate from numerous government and rail agencies, including the China Ministry of Railways, Shanghai Shentong Metro Co., Paris Public Transport Authority, Network Rail, London Underground Ltd., Beijing Subway Operation Co. Ltd., Seoul Metro, Taipei Rapid Transit Corp., Kowloon-Canton Railway Corp. and Queensland Rail.

Topics will include policy trends for China’s rail industry development, challenges and opportunities for 21st Century urban rail transport, how to build “green” and efficient city rail transport, and energy-saving and environmentally friendly locomotives in the marketplace.

“China has already become one of the world’s largest markets for both urban and intercity rail, attracting attention from … rail design institutes, investment organizations, management companies and equipment suppliers,” City-Rail 2007 organizers said in a prepared statement. “How to promote sound development for both urban and intercity rail transport; enhance planning, construction, operation and technological innovation; and manage market opportunities, and reduce investment and operation risks, etc., have become issues of high concern by industry experts.”
