Class I employment increased in September

Class Is employed 117,582 workers in the United States as of mid-September, a 0.49% increase from August employment levels and a 2.95% increase year over year, according to Surface Transportation Board data.

Five of six employment categories registered employment increases between August and September. They were: transportation (train and engine), up 0.85% to 49,173 employees; maintenance of equipment and stores, up 0.84% to 17,556; executives, officials and staff assistants, up 0.24% to 7,919; professional and administrative, up 0.19% to 9,810; and transportation (other than train and engine), up 0.04% to 4,718.

The one category that posted a month-to-month decrease in employment was maintenance of way and structures, which fell 0.11% to 28,406 workers.

Year over year, the following five categories registered increases: executives, officials and staff assistants, up 9.26%; transportation (train and engine), up 4.79%; maintenance of equipment and stores, up 2.1%; transportation (other than train and engine), up 0.51%; and maintenance of way and structures, up 0.29%. 

The professional and administrative category logged a 0.21% decrease in the number of employees as of mid-September compared to the year-ago level.
