Rail News: Rail Industry Trends

Class I employment rose 6% in January

Class Is employed 119,245 people as of mid-January 2023, a 6.27% increase from January 2022, but a 0.09% decrease from December 2022 employment levels, according to Surface Transportation Board data.

Four of six employment categories registered increases between December 2022 and January 2023. Those categories were transportation (other than train and engine), up 0.68% to 4,854 workers; professional and administrative, up 0.53% to 10,081; transportation (train and engine), up 0.27% to 50,313; and executives, officials and staff assistants, up 0.01% to 7,998.

The two categories that registered month-to-month decreases were maintenance of way and structures, down 1.09% to 28,205 employees, and maintenance of equipment and stores, down 0.09% to 17,794.

Year over year, all employment categories posted increases: transportation (train and engine), up 9.93%; executives, officials and staff assistants, up 6.75%; maintenance of equipment and stores, up 4.98%; transportation (other than train and engine), up 4.03%; maintenance of way and structures, up 2.68%; and professional and administrative, up 2.22%.
