The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (GCRTA) recently completed two infrastructure improvement projects.
The authority spent $750,000 to make the Shaker Square light-rail station handicapped accessible. Funded mostly through federal dollars, the project included installing a powered wheelchair lift, wide wheelchair ramp, sidewalk ramps, signage and tactile tiles. The upgrade is part of GCRTA’s ongoing accessibility program.
The agency also applied a $360,000 Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency grant toward costs to upgrade and improve landscaping along a light-rail median between the Shaker Square and Coventry stations. GCRTA added new curbing, grass and landscaping, two wrought-iron fences, a crossing at Coventry Station and pedestrian benches.
