Congo plans to privatize national freight/passenger railway

advertisement

The Republic of Congo plans this year to privatize Congo Ocean Railway Corp. (CFCO).
The country recently received 23 letters of interest from North American, European and African companies; Congo plans by late July to pre-qualify bidders and, in fall, name a concessionaire.
The successful bidder would be responsible for the technical and commercial operations of CFCO's freight and passenger services, and
for the maintenance, operation, renewal and development of the railway's infrastructure and rights of way.
CFCO, which last year moved 520,000 tons of freight and 571,000 passengers, recorded $21.4 million in 2001 revenue. The railway operates on 1,115 track miles, employs 2,884, and manages 22 locomotives, 418 rail cars, 173 private rail cars and 20 passenger cars.
