Connecticut lands stimulus funds for Providence and Worcester, passenger-rail projects

Last week, Connecticut Gov. M. Jodi Rell announced the state will receive $1.73 million in federal stimulus dollars to help fund three projects aimed at reducing diesel-engine emissions.
The Providence and Worcester Railroad Co. will receive $750,000 to replace a traditional diesel locomotive engine with low-emission generators and diesel particulate filters — the first project of its kind in Connecticut, Rell said in a prepared statement.
In addition, the Connecticut Department of Transportation will receive $510,000 to retrofit 170 diesel-engine vehicles and various pieces of construction equipment, and the Port of New Haven will obtain $380,200 for a truck stop electrification parking area.
Rell also announced that the state has approved nearly $163 million worth of federal stimulus-funded rail, bus and pedestrian/bike trail projects.
The rail projects call for installing centralized train control and signals on the Danbury Branch line ($30 million); building a service and maintenance shop for 300 commuter-rail cars at the New Haven Rail Yard ($30 million); improving the New Haven Line Station ($10 million); and expanding the Shoreline East Branford Station’s parking area ($5.4 million).
