On Dec. 31, RailAmerica Inc. Senior Vice President of Transportation Jack Conser retired, ending his 42-year railroad career, according to American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association's bi-weekly newsletter released Jan. 20.


In 1961, Conser began his career as a clerk with Reading Railroad, later serving New York Central Railroad and Penn Central Transportation Co.


From 1973 to 1985, he served as superintendent of traffic for Providence & Worcester Railroad, and from 1985 to 1992, he served as general manager for Genesee & Wyoming Railroad, Rochester & Southern Railroad, Buffalo & Pittsburgh Railroad, and Dansville & Mt. Morris Railroad.


In 1992, Conser joined RailAmerica, serving as vice president and general manager of Huron & Eastern Railway. Most recently, he was responsible for negotiating with rail-labor unions, completing due diligence for acquisitions and obtaining state grant funds.


"Jack was instrumental in growing business at this railroad in its early stages and making it a model short-line operation for future RailAmerica railroads to follow," said Gary Marino, RailAmerica chairman, president and chief executive officer.


Conser plans to spend more time with his wife and two children in Boynton Beach, Fla.
