The Containerization & Intermodal Institute has announced the recipients of the 2006 Connie Awards: intermodal industry pioneer Phillip Yeager and ocean shipping veteran Anil Jay Vitarana.

The institute will present the awards — which recognize individuals who demonstrate leadership in furthering containerization and intermodalism — at a luncheon to be held Dec. 11 in Newark, N.J.

Founder and long-time chairman of intermodal marketing company The Hub Group Inc., Yeager became involved in the intermodal industry in 1959 at the Pennsylvania and Pennsylvania Central railroads. He spent 12 of his 19 years at the railroads introducing intermodal transportation. Yeager has received numerous awards for his efforts, including the Man of the Year from the Intermodal Transportation Association and Salzburg Practitioners Award from Syracuse University.

President of United Arab Agencies Inc., Vitarana oversees nine North American offices for six Arabian Gulf countries’ national shipping line. He is active in numerous industry associations and international humanitarian efforts. Vitrana currently serves on the board of the International Institute of New Jersey, which helps immigrants assimilate into American culture. In addition, he has been assisting post-tsunami restoration efforts in his native Sri Lanka.

A trade association serving all modes involved in international containerization and intermodalism, the institute has presented Connies to more than 30 people since the organization was founded in 1960.
